A geotechnical engineer is a person trained and licensed by the state to analyze and test earth materials. Geotechnical engineers investigate soil mechanics to assess subsurface materials and conditions and their physical properties. They also evaluate the stability of man made and natural slopes, as well as designing earthwork and structure foundations, such as post-tension concrete slabs for homes and condominiums.
